Math can seem like such a mystery!  It even seems magical at times.  So, what is this thing called Mathematics anyway?  

You can think of Mathematics as a language.  It is a way of communicating with numbers, a way of thinking and a way of answering.  Math starts with counting and adding which you may recall from childhood.  It was (and is still being) created to help us understand the universe in which we live!  And that is good news for us.  Mathematicians investigate 'truths', they study patterns, create symbols and science and they create shortcuts for us to use.  Shortcuts?!  That is really good news, we all like shortcuts, right?

Shortcuts?  Yeah! For example, Multiplication is simply a shortcut for addition (adding) without counting over and over and over again.  So, multiplication is faster - yay! Would you rather spend lots of time counting and adding really, really, big numbers if you had to, or couldn't you simply learn to multiply??? Good, now all you have to do is memorize those pesky multiplication tables... lol!

Want another Example?  Let's say you have lots and lots of money in your pockets - sounds good, right?  OK, then maybe pennies aren't the things you should carry.  Do you think multiples of pennies called dollars would be a little easier to carry?  I do!  There are plenty of other everyday uses for math.

Everyday uses?  Well, businesses use math to determine company growth and worth, farmers use math to estimate our crops over acres and acres of land, families use it to balance our checkbooks, shoppers to calculate purchases, diners to figure out good (and not so good) tips at restaurants and so much more...

I tutor because here are some of the concerns i hear:

Why is Math so hard?  The best Mathematics education requires a give and take approach for most students.   Unfortunately, in most school situations, you won't have time to receive that.  Sure there are some areas of math where repetition is required (like those annoying times tables :), but you don't need extra support for that, you need practice (you may just need to know how to make that practice fun for you).  You may need someone like a tutor or coach to practice with, but the really important part of math learning involves problem solving.  And problem solving requires coaching, guidance and feedback.  It also requires a varied approach.  Again, there isn't time for that in our current education system.  Unfortunately, procedures are the big push in mathematics education in this country.  And that is an error.  There are many ways to solve a problem and memorizing procedures doesn't promote cognitive or problem solving abilities.  

Why do the rules keep changing?  One year we estimate this way and the next year we estimate that way.  Kids are learning 'the new math'?  What happened to the old math?  No wonder parents can't seem to help.

What about math homework?  It doesn't help most students!  When trying your homework, what happens if you hit a roadblock or draw a blank?  For most students, there is no way around it.  Without reinforcement during homework time, students begin to feel abandoned, embarrassed, sad and/or annoyed and eventually learn to simply give up!  

Algebra???  I know, you're thinking about that dreaded 'A' word - Algebra, Albegra, Algebra - yikes!  What is a variable anyway and why does it keep changing?  

And what about Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences?  There are at least 9 types of intelligences and as many learning styles.  Are you a verbal learner, a visual thinker, do you prefer to read, to write, to talk or maybe to listen?  Do you enjoy nature and outdoors, music, running, jumping, flipping, swimming, arguing, singing, drawing, acting or dancing?!

If you or your child is not excelling in math you have concerns, too.  You (or your child) my not be receiving the information in the style that works best for you.  It's not your fault, it's just the way our system is set up.  Sometimes the right coach is all that is needed to set you on the path to being the best student YOU can be!  All the concerns above and more are handled by me, your Math Genie.  Never fear, your Math Genie is here!

What about Math and Me? - I have been gifted with an intuitive understanding of mathematics often using my own methods to make it easier.  I have enjoyed solving logic and lateral thinking puzzles, math problems, the rubik's cube and questions about the universe since i was very young.  I studied Mechanical Engineering and worked for over 10 years before leaving to raise my 2 beautiful girls.  I have my K-12 Teaching License and taught at the High School and Collegiate levels.  I have always loved listening to the way other people see and think about math, life and the challenges therein.  By working together i have been able to share this special gift with those whose lives i am so blessed to know.
